Fewer inmates to work on Pueblo County farms this year

PUEBLO COUNTY -

Major cuts are hitting an inmate work program that allows women in prison to work on Pueblo County farms.

Farmers tell News5 the Colorado Department of Corrections is cutting the program by more than 20 percent. That means they're not extending their contracts with several Pueblo County farmers that rely on this program.

"This cutting it is really going to hurt a lot of people," Nick Genova, owner of Genova Farms said.

Genova has been using the inmate work program on his farm since it started, eight years ago.
