| Inmate escapes en route to court |

A Joplin, Mo., man who escaped from custody last Wednesday outside the Jasper County Courts Building at Sixth Street and Pearl Avenue in Joplin sparked a manhunt by two departments and lockdowns at several public schools and a church preschool before the man was captured. The Jasper County Sheriff's Department said James A. Bresee, 23, 2213 S. Moffet Ave., added a new felony charge of attempted escape to the list of charges he faced in five other cases. A misdemeanor charge of aiding the escape of a prisoner was filed against Clifford Michael Metcalf, 19, 922 S. Chestnut Ave. He is accused helping hide Bresee from authorities. Jasper County sheriff's Sgt. Jerry Gilbert said Bresee was being transported with about 16 other inmates in two vehicles from the county jail at Carthage to the courts building in Joplin for a hearing. He apparently slipped his hand out of his handcuffs about 8:25 a.m. and ran from a jailer. Gilbert said one jailer had been assigned to each vehicle. Leg irons were not used on the inmates because the department did not have enough for all of those being transported, Gilbert said. Gilbert said Bresee ran northwest from the courts building to the area of Fifth Street and Byers Avenue, where he stripped off his orange jail shirt, then ran to the 600 block of Moffet Avenue, where he asked a woman for a ride. "The woman he received a ride from didn't realize he was an escaped inmate; you can buy our orange jail suits at the mall," Gilbert said. "He told her he was being beaten up and needed a ride to 922 S. Chestnut. "Joplin Police Department's canine tracked the suspect to the woman's house, and when we told her what happened, she told us where she took the suspect." Gilbert said officers spoke with Metcalf, and he told them he gave Bresee a change of clothes, and that Bresee ran out the back of his house when a helicopter flew overhead. "When we placed him under arrest for aiding an escape, the subject at the house suddenly changed his mind and decided to tell us that Bresee was hiding in his home," Gilbert said. "We found him hiding in the home's attic." Bresee was caught at 9:25 a.m. |
