Three Etowah County (Ala.) Detention Center employees have resigned after a Venezuelan inmate conned them into bringing him toothpaste, which had an ingredient that made it appear he could have cancer. Sheriff James Hayes said the scam was concocted to gain sympathy from immigration officials in an apparent effort to get released. Hayes said the employees resigned following an internal investigation that was completed yesterday. The employees were not forced to resign and did not violate any rules. Hayes said the toothpaste apparently has an ingredient that raises the prostate specific antigen level in blood tests. The man told employees the government seized $14 million when he was coming into the country and that was the only reason he was detained, but that was determined to be untrue. Hassell said the man was being detained on felony charges. The inmate is now being held at another immigration holding facility. |
