A state lawmaker who advocated for a statewide fugitive alert system after two inmates walked away from a state facility in Oshkosh said Monday that changes have been made. Rep. David Steffen, R-Howard, announced that the Wisconsin Department of Corrections will now directly notify news media and the public "on a timely basis" of inmates escaping from a minimum-security corrections facility or work release site, according to a news release. The department previously relied on local police to alert the public during such incidents. “I’m thankful for the Department of Corrections’ prompt response to my request for an enhanced public notification policy," Steffen said in a statement.
