SLIDELL, La.-- An inmate, who has been convicted of gun and drug charges in New Orleans escaped from the St Tammany work release program on St Patrick's Day, but the St. Tammany Sheriff only alerted the Department of Corrections, not the general public about it. Cecil Martin is the convicted felon who escaped. The Orleans Parish District Attorney’s Office has prosecuted Martin on a number of charges in the past. In fact, Martin was one of 11 members of the “6th Ward D-Block” gang included in an unusual racketeering indictment in 2010. Most recently, Martin pleaded guilty to crack dealing charges and possessing a stolen weapon as a convicted felon last June. He was sentenced to serve ten years in prison under the La. Department of Corrections. “Under the law of the state of Louisiana, he is entitled to what we call "good time" or diminution of sentence after he serves 40 percent of his sentence. So, he is technically eligible to be released on a 10-year sentence after he only serves 4 years,” said Orleans Parish District Attorney Leon Cannizzaro. Read More. |
