WASHINGTON -- Despite a spate of well publicized escapes - including inmates who fled Ohio and North Carolina prisons in unrelated Easter Sunday jailbreaks - federal statistics show such breakouts aren't as common as they used to be. Even as the prison population has ballooned, Bureau of Justice statistics show escapes from state prisons are down. The federal agency says 7,650 prisoners escaped or went absent without leave from prison facilities in 1978 - the earliest date for which statistics are available - out of a 307,276 prison population.
