| State addresses mental health in the court system |

SIOUX FALLS - The Helmsley Charitable Trust funded a study to look at the issue of mental health in South Dakota. The report found the state not only has a higher than national average of people suffering from mental illness, but that it also has limited access to mental health care. Many people in the court system and in jails across South Dakota suffer from mental illness. It's why state leaders are enacting a task force study to help keep some people out of the criminal justice system. South Dakota Chief Justice David Gilbertson said "law enforcement, our courts and jails are faced with the challenge of responding to the needs of individuals with mental illness, but the criminal justice system is often not the most appropriate and cost effective response. One of my personal concerns is the wait times for competency exams for defendants with suspected mental illness." Read More. |
