LANSING — A protest over food and other issues spread to a second state prison in the Upper Peninsula this week, with nearly all prisoners in one wing of Chippewa Correctional Facility refusing to show up for meals, a Corrections Department spokesman confirmed Wednesday. The demonstrations at Chippewa, which took place Saturday through Monday, followed protests at another Kincheloe-area prison, Kinross Correctional Facility, held March 20-21, Chris Gautz told the Free Press. Both protests were characterized by extremely high participation rates among inmates, which disturbed Michigan Corrections Organization officials and also got the attention of the prisons' administration, Gautz said.
