The search for a child rapist who escaped from a Bridgewater, Mass. treatment center ended Tuesday with the capture of John McIntyre, 40, who was missing since Sunday night.

Prison officials said McIntyre made his escape late Sunday night after prison roll call at 9:30 p.m.

TheBostonChannel reported that McIntyre, civilly committed to Bridgewater's Center for Sexually Dangerous Criminals since 1984, was under consideration for release based on his good behavior. But his therapist said he should still be considered dangerous and his family was urging him to turn himself in.

Authorities searched the area surrounding the Bridgewater prison by air and on foot with no success Monday. He was last seen on Sunday at the Community Transition House.

"He left through the second-story of the building, lowered himself down and we believe he scaled the perimeter fence," said prison Comissioner Michael Maloney.

McIntyre apparently lowered himself using an electrical cord, Maloney said.

Seven months ago, McIntyre was transferred to the less restrictive facility at Bridgewater. As required by state law, inmates must be administered a community access program..

Monday night, Bridgewater residents, who were advised of McIntyre's escape, said they were keeping a close eye on their children.
