A Toledo murderer believed to be the longest-serving inmate in the state prison system has died at 88.

Charles W. Leichty was committed to the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction in 1958 after he was convicted of murder in Lucas County Common Pleas Court for the rape and strangulation of Sonya Sue Long, 15, who at the time was a Scott High School sophomore.

Bret Vinocur, president of Block Parole Inc., organized a petition drive to keep Leichty in prison when he came up for parole in 2013.
