Northumberland County (Pa.) Prison officials began drug-testing 90 inmates Wednesday after a man arrested Tuesday night apparently smuggled marijuana into the facility. Warden Ralph "Rick" Reish said during a county prison board meeting that one entire cell block was locked down Wednesday morning while prison officials investigated the incident. The cell block was locked down "as soon as I got to work this morning," Reish said. During that lockdown, all the inmates in the cell block were being tested to see which of them had used drugs, Reish said. During the prison board meeting, President Judge Robert B. Sacavage said that officials would have little to say about the incident because an investigation was under way. The judge said there is no indication that any prison workers helped the inmates smuggle the drugs into the facility. "This is nothing involving prison personnel," he said. "These things happen from time to time. We're saying as much as we're going to say about it because it's a criminal investigation." But a prison official told The Daily Item that staff found marijuana, prompting the lockdown. Prison officials wouldn't identify the man suspected of bringing the drug into the prison and no criminal charges were immediately filed. The suspect was arrested on a bench warrant for failing to appear for a preliminary hearing before District Justice William Kear in Milton. |
