| GBI investigating assault on youth detention center inmate |

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is investigating a report that an 11-year-old boy was beaten and sexually assaulted by three other boys at the Savannah Regional Youth Detention Center. The boy's mother reported the attack Tuesday after taking her son to the hospital, Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police spokesman Sgt. Mike Wilson said. The case was turned over to the GBI because the alleged assault happened on state-owned property. Special Agent John Edwards, head of the GBI's Statesboro office, said they are investigating the incident but declined to give any details. According to a Savannah-Chatham police report, the boy was assaulted last month while serving a three-week sentence at the detention center. He had been incarcerated for getting into a fight at his elementary school, police said. |
