GOSHEN — Elkhart County Commissioners voted Monday to make the 12-hour shifts proposed by Sheriff Brad Rogers permanent for county patrol and corrections officers. Rogers began the pilot program in the first fiscal quarter of 2016, moving away from eight-hour work shifts. Rogers already received the blessing of the Elkhart County Council for the change Saturday. Rogers described the change as a paradigm shift in the way his department does business moving from the traditional three eight-hour shifts over a 24-hour period to two 12-hour shifts. “This is a community safety issue,” Rogers said during Saturday’s council meeting, noting the change allows for more officers to be on patrol and in the county correctional facility at any given time without the need for hiring additional staff. “You’re basically eliminating one shift, and all that personnel is being distributed among the other two shifts.” Read More. |
