Soon after his transfer to a northern Florida prison in June, Cordell Washington spotted an old enemy from years past: Steven Benson. Their reunion didn't last long. Within days, Washington stabbed Benson in the right side of the head with a shank, ending a long-simmering feud between the prisoners and killing one of Collier County's most notorious murderers, according to investigators and fellow inmates. Newly obtained documents show the deep animosity between Benson and Washington, which stemmed from a series of prison assaults in 2012, likely led to the death of Benson, who killed his mother and adopted brother with a pipe bomb in 1985. Benson carried out the murder as part of a scheme to inherit his family's tobacco fortune, and the case became a national sensation, bringing never-before-seen attention to Southwest Florida.
