Smugglers get creative: From kisses to coloring books, drugs flow into NH prisons

CONCORD - Jeffrey Lyons has seen some creative attempts to smuggle drugs into New Hampshire state prisons. The arrest last week of a Vermont woman trying to get $23,000 worth of drugs into the Concord prison was just the most recent example.

A longtime prison chef was charged in November with bringing nearly $70,000 worth of drugs into the Berlin prison, in one of the most high-profile arrests.

But cases like those, which get widespread publicity, are just the tip of the iceberg, according to Lyons, public information office for the Department of Corrections, which controls the men's prisons in Concord and Berlin, and the women's prison in Goffstown.
