Escapee’s Child Had Been Taken By The State

LINCOLN — The director of Nebraska’s troubled prison system was quizzed Monday by state lawmakers about problems with staff turnover, recent assaults on corrections officers and what’s being done to curb the use of solitary confinement.

State Corrections Director Scott Frakes said the department is making progress but still has a long way to go.

He also rejected a suggestion from State Sen. Ernie Chambers of Omaha that he resign.

Chambers, a frequent critic of the Department of Corrections, charged that state corrections officers were giving Nikko Jenkins sharp objects so he could kill himself and that Frakes, as head of the department, wasn’t doing enough to stop it.
