| SIU professor tapped to review inmate programs for effectiveness |

CARBONDALE — An SIU professor has been tapped by the Illinois Department of Corrections to conduct a top-to-bottom review of the effectiveness of every offender program at reducing recidivism. The work is being done by a team under the direction of Daryl Kroner, an SIU professor of criminology, who previously worked for 20 years as a prison psychologist in Canada. Kroner has been a member of the SIU Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice since 2008. IDOC spokeswoman Nicole Wilson said the agency has contracted with SIU Carbondale for the evaluation of programs “in an effort to improve outcomes and drive down the prison population.” Upon completion of the review, expected in a little more than a year, Wilson said that Kroner will work with the department to identify which programs are effective, and those that fall short.
