| Hampden County sheriff hopeful Tom Ashe unveils regional lockup plan |

SPRINGFIELD — City Councilor Tom Ashe, who is running for Hampden County sheriff, announced Wednesday a comprehensive plan for a so-called "regional lockup" that would house arrested individuals at the agency's Ludlow facility instead of local police departments. Ashe, who previously worked for the Hampden County and Worcester County sheriff's departments, is the latest candidate to say if elected to succeed outgoing Sheriff Michael J. Ashe Jr. – to whom he is not related – he would seek to run a regional lockup facility at the Hampden County Correctional Center. Stressing that it's "time for a regional lockup at the Hampden County Sheriff's Department," Ashe contended that there are empty pods at the jail that can be used to accommodate those arrested by local police departments.
