Smokestack at correctional facility demolished

Demolition of a smokestack that stood on the eastern grounds of the Boonville Correctional Facility was completed Thursday morning.

Razing began Wednesday morning as crews used a wrecking ball connected to a crane, to demolish the structure beginning at the top. The structure had not been used for some time and was slated to be demolished earlier.

“The smokestack at the Boonville Correctional Center was part of the power plant that was built to power the original facility that was known as the Missouri Training School for Boys. The Missouri Department of Corrections acquired the facility for use as a correctional center in 1983. The nonfunctioning smokestack was targeted for demolition last year because there were some bricks that were beginning to bulge in the structure, making the smokestack a safety and security concern for the facility,” Communications Director of the Missouri Department of Corrections David Owen stated.
