| Dakota Women's Correctional and Rehabilitation Center struggles with budget shortfall as inmate counts rise |

NEW ENGLAND — The women's prison in New England has high walls but a short budget — nearly $1.5 million short, according to its administrators. Rachelle Juntunen, warden of the Dakota Women's Correctional and Rehabilitation Center, said the facility is facing a "financial loss" as it uses its cash reserves to cover a budget shortfall increased by the 4.05 percent across-the-board cut to state entities enacted earlier this year by Gov. Jack Dalrymple. Despite the shortage, Juntunen said the prison must continue to operate as it has in the past, when money was less of an issue.
