| Kids struggle with parents behind bars |

TRAVERSE CITY — A nationwide Kids Count policy report indicates an alarming trend for children across the state. The Annie E. Casey foundation report released Monday shows 228,000 Michigan children — or about one in 10 — have had a parent incarcerated in their lifetime. Only Indiana and Kentucky are listed as having a higher percentage. Amber Lee, a clinical supervisor of behavioral health at Child and Family Services of Northwest Michigan said the trend is mirrored in northern Michigan as well and she’s surprised those rates aren’t higher. “It’s significant,” Lee said. “We deal with it frequently because it’s so common and the lasting impact on the child is pretty profound.
