| 65K N.J. children have grown up with a parent in prison |

TRENTON — More than 65,000 children in New Jersey have lost a parent to incarceration, an experience that dramatically increases their chances of living in poverty, dropping out of school and suffering enduring emotional trauma, a national study released Monday said. However, New Jersey has the smallest percent of its child population in the nation separated from parent in jail or prison, according to the Annie E. Casey Foundation, the research and advocacy group for disadvantaged kids. There are 3 percent of children in New Jersey whose parents have spent time in jail or prison, compared to Kentucky, at 13 percent, the according to 2011-12 data cited in the report.
