A recent spike in inmates at Metro Corrections led officials Monday to move 75 inmates to an old jail above Louisville Metro Police headquarters that has been closed because it does not meet state safety standards.

Built to house 1,793 inmates between its main jail and the Community Correctional Complex, Metro Corrections has seen its population swell above 2,000 in the last 10 days, said Steve Durham, corrections assistant director in a news release.

As of Monday, there were 2,046 inmates housed at local jail facilities, with the bulk at the main jail at 400 S. Sixth Street – 1,601 for a space designed for 1,353.

Acknowledging that the old jail built in the 1950s above the police department is not normally used because it's not up to fire suppression and smoke evaluation standards, Durham said there's simply no room left to safely house inmates.
