Inmates move to old jail amid overcrowding

LOUISVILLE, Ky. —The director of Metro Corrections said he made the decision Monday to move inmates to the old jail at the top of the Louisville Metro Police Department.

Mark Bolton said on Monday there were 2,060 inmates in Metro Corrections, about 200 more than capacity. By the end of Tuesday, 100 inmates were moved to the outdated jail built in the 1950s.

Bolton said Metro Corrections hasn’t seen inmate numbers this high since 2013, which was the last time the old jail was used as overflow housing.
