An inmate serving two concurrent life sentences in the South Dakota State Penitentiary died at a Sioux Falls hospital on Friday. James Smith, 63, was hospitalized after falling ill on April 21, Department of Corrections spokesman Michael Winder said. An autopsy is being done on Smith. Smith was sentenced in March 1990 to two concurrent life sentences for first-degree murder and first-degree robbery in Lincoln County. On Oct. 16, 1989, Smith and his accomplice, Paul Wood, robbed a bank in Fairview, documents from the South Dakota Unified Judicial System website show.
