Cheyenne – Governor Matt Mead will sign a proclamation to designate May 2-6, 2016, as Wyoming Correctional Professionals' Week during an exemplary employee luncheon to be held on May 4. The week will also consist of activities to recognize employees for the dedication and hard work. The activities will take place throughout the Wyoming Department of Corrections, including the correctional facilities and probation and parole offices. The Department of Corrections runs five prisons and 25 probation and parole offices that cover each of the 23 counties. The administrative offices are in Cheyenne. On Wednesday, May 4, 2016, sixteen exemplary employees from throughout the department will be recognized in Cheyenne at an awards ceremony and luncheon. The staff, who work in the state's prisons and probation and parole offices provide for the safety of Wyoming’s communities and citizens; give offenders opportunities to become law-abiding citizens using research based approaches through education, counseling and other resources; develop partnerships with victims, community members, public and private agencies; and recognize that human relationships which are principled, ethical and reasonable are the cornerstone of the Wyoming Department of Corrections' commitment to its mission. In 1984 President Ronald Reagan proclaimed the first full week of May as National Correctional Officers Week, and called upon officials of State and local governments and the people of the United States to observe this week with appropriate ceremonies and activities. The President noted in his proclamation that “the important work of correctional Officers often does not receive the recognition from the public it deserves. It is appropriate that we honor the many contributions and accomplishments of these men and women who are a vital component of the field of corrections”. |
