| Area legislators working to keep local facility open |

Whether or not the Illinois Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) continues to operate the Illinois Youth Center-Kewanee, efforts are continuing at the state and local levels to ensure that the facility continues to be used, and not abandoned. The Commission on Government Forecasting and Accountability voted Tuesday to recommend that IYC-Kewanee not be closed as a juvenile facility. But that vote is advisory and is not binding on Gov. Bruce Rauner. Even so, Rep. Don Moffitt, D-Gilson, said Tuesday that the commission’s vote was important. Moffitt said the vote sent a message to the Rauner administration that the Kewanee facility should still be used by the state in some form. Moffitt thanked legislators David Leitch, Mike Smiddy and Neal Anderson, who all spoke at Tuesday’s hearing against closing IYC-Kewanee. Read More. |
