| Convict escapes Athens work detail, brutally assaults Gwinnett officer, police say |

According to the Gwinnett County Police Department, 25-year-old David Earl Gill was walking with a duffel bag on Winder Highway in Dacula at about 2 a.m. Wednesday when the officer made contact with him in connection with a burglary investigation. Gill reportedly ran and then struggled with the officer, at which time the officer’s baton fell. “The suspect picked up the asp (expandable) baton and struck the officer in the face several times,” police said. “The officer began bleeding profusely, became dizzy, and was having a difficult time seeing the suspect. The officer drew his service weapon and ordered the suspect onto the ground. The suspect immediately dropped the asp baton and sat on the ground.” Read More. |
