PARCHMAN, Miss. - State prison officials say parts of the Mississippi State Penitentiary at Parchman are on lockdown because inmates have assaulted staff members and inspections have turned up banned items, including shanks, cellphones, cash and alcohol. A Department of Corrections news release Friday says visitation is canceled until further notice at three Parchman units because of the problems. Inmates’ commissary and telephone privileges are suspended in those areas — Units 26 and 30 and most of Unit 29. The release says five Parchman officers this week received injuries that were not life-threatening, and one of the officers had to be treated at a local hospital.
