(Clarinda) – A program aimed at helping veterans begins at the Clarinda Correctional Facility. Members of the Animal Rescue League of Iowa (ARL) brought four dogs to the prison Wednesday morning. Inmates will train the dogs daily for six to eight weeks to become companions for area veterans. Warden Sheryl Dahm tells KMA News the dog training program is a win-win situation. “The inmates are able to give back to the community that they have harmed. Maybe not in the way they have committed their crime, but in a way that gives back to people,” Dahm said. “It also teaches them time management, empathy, caring about something other than themselves, and a little bit of patience. For the staff, it gives them the ability to a part of a program that gives back to their community and to our military vets.” Read More. |
