| Oregon State Penitentiary observes 150th anniversary |

When Oregon was only seven years into statehood, officials abandoned its penitentiary site in Portland and set up its first permanent prison in Salem. Over its century and a half existence, the prison, which is nestled east of downtown Salem, has expanded into 22 acres and now houses more than 2,000 inmates. For almost 100 years, it was the only prison in Oregon. On Thursday, the Oregon State Penitentiary commemorated its 150th anniversary. About 200 prison officials, corrections officers, retired employees and family members gathered outside the towering walls of the prison, remembered its past and looked toward the future. "We've survived riots, escapes, executions, floods and as reports suggest: general mayhem," Oregon Department of Corrections Director Colette Peters said. "We've always come out on the other side."
