| Convicted Missouri killer serving life term dies |

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. A prison inmate serving a life sentence for a murder in Springfield 26 years ago died at a hospital in Springfield on Saturday. The Missouri Department of Corrections says John Hayes, 48, died of apparent natural causes. Hayes began serving his sentence in 1999 for second-degree murder and lately had been confined to the South Central Correctional Center in Licking. A Newton County jury convicted Hayes of killing a former girlfriend, Stacy Fowler, also known as Stacy Charrier, in Springfield, and putting her body in a sinkhole near his father's vacation home near Kimberling City. Two teenage boys found Fowler's remains on Jan. 1, 1998, when they were exploring the sinkhole. Read More. |
