| Local officials offer assistance to Department of Corrections |

Municipal, county and school officials from Beaver to Broken Bow gathered at the Oklahoma Municipal League offices Monday to discuss the recent action taken by the Department of Corrections to close the 15 work release centers located around the state. Officials were not only concerned with the wide-ranging impact to their communities, but also the lack of notification prior to the action taking place and not being given an opportunity to express their concerns in an open and public forum, according to a release by the Oklahoma Municipal League. “I’d like to know why the Department of Corrections didn’t communicate their budget concerns with us?” Walters city manager John Sheppard said. “We may have been able to negotiate a better cost structure for the Department than Corrections Corporation of America. We could have been part of the solution.” The Department of Corrections has entered into a five year contract with Corrections Corporation of America, a private prison company, for the lease of the Northfolk Correctional Facility in Sayre.
