UI's prison college program paying off

DANVILLE — As a teenager growing up on Chicago's south side, Bernard Patton saw many peers drop out of school. At 16, he did, too.

"I was running the streets," said Patton, who was bright but didn't see the value of an education.

It wasn't long before he landed in the state's prison system.

"As an adult, I began to feel empty because I hadn't achieved anything academically," said Patton, who set a goal of earning his GED.
