| Fallen DOC officer recognized more than 100 years after dying in the line of duty |

About 102 years passed before most people knew there was a fallen Department of Corrections officer buried at Greenwood Pioneer Cemetery. Cpt. John Brown Russell never received a headstone after he died in the line of duty in June 1913. But it didn't take long for local officials to give him recognition once they learned of his grave. After 15 minutes of phone calls and one hour-long ceremony Monday, Russell finally received a memorial and headstone. The ceremony, which featured speeches from retired warden Dave Zupan and demonstrations from Elks Lodge No. 610 and the DOC honor guard, recognized Russell's sacrifice and service. Zupan, who was the master of ceremonies, said Russell's story reflects Fremont County and the many families, including his own, who have been involved in corrections. Read More. |
