| Belknap County breaks ground on community corrections center |

LACONIA— Talks about a new Belknap County jail have been discussed for many years, with one estimate eclipsing $42 million. On Tuesday afternoon, Belknap County officials — alongside construction personnel, architects and even inmates — broke ground on a project that should amount to less than $8 million. “This is a good day for Belknap County,” said David DeVoy, who is the chairman of the Belknap County commissioners, as well as the county’s building committee. “This community corrections center has been a long time coming.” DeVoy said that when he campaigned for office two years ago, there was a discussion about a $42.6 million jail, which was estimated by Ricci Greene Associates. He said that he and his fellow commissioners felt they could do it for less. They came up with a project for a quarter of that amount that is aimed at reducing recidivism, improving conditions of the jail and dealing with overcrowding in the current facility. Read More. |
