The state will close a minimum-security prison, a move that could generate funds to help communities handle an influx of offenders that are diverted from state prisons to county jails after sentencing reforms passed by the legislature in 2014.

The Indiana Department of Correction will close its Henryville facility in Clark County by July 1, the state announced Wednesday. Officials project the closing will save $2.25 million in 2017, a DOC spokesman confirmed.

The closure will affect 140 offenders and 36 staff members, according to a DOC news release. Henryville inmates will move to either the Branchville or Edinburgh correctional facilities, and all prison employees will be offered vacant positions at neighboring facilities.

“In order to realize significant cost savings, facilities like Henryville Correctional Facility with fixed costs including physical plant operation, maintenance and other related overhead need to be closed,” Commissioner Bruce Lemmon said. “The IDOC has already begun to help ensure our staff members affected by the closure are offered positions at other nearby facilities or state agencies.”
