| Residents complain about prisoner reintegration |

A GROUP running a prisoner reintegration programme in Gisborne has said it is not responsible for telling neighbours about people released into their community. Contracted to the Department of Corrections, the Salvation Army has secured four homes in a Kaiti street to house recently-released prisoners, prompting complaints from nearby residents who believe they should have been consulted or, at least, notified. However, Salvation Army head of integration services Glen Buckner said it is up to the Department of Corrections to “consider notifying specific individuals about the release of offenders into the community”, while Corrections said it does the work first in approving a suitable address for an offender. “An address would not be approved where it was considered that there was an undue risk to the safety of the community,” said George Massingham, the department’s acting district manager for East Coast Community Corrections.
