| Law makes “dramatic change” to treatment of young offenders |

BENNINGTON — A new law signed by Gov. Peter Shumlin on Wednesday was described by state Sen. Dick Sears as the most “dramatic change to juvenile criminal justice in Vermont in a generation.” Sears, chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, said the changes to the way Vermont treats young offenders, phased in over time, will reduce crime because it will treat children as children rather than adults. In Vermont, people who are 16 or 17 are charged in criminal court for any offense including misdemeanors. Under the new law, by 2018, people as old as 18 would be tried in family court. Read More. |
