| Cities suffer as Illinois falls behind on prison utility payments |

WSIL -- As Illinois faces another year without a budget, the state's bill backlog approaches nearly $7 billion. Vendors who provide critical state services are struggling to accommodate delayed payments, some by as much as eight months. It's a big problem for small southern Illinois towns that provide water and sewer service to state prisons. For utilities at Menard Prison, Illinois owes the city of Chester $1.1million. For the Pinckneyville Correctional Center, the state owes the city of Pinckneyville $711,000. The city of Centralia is short $394,000 in state money for water provided at the Centralia Correctional Center. Read More. |
