| Five inmates commended for efforts to save ODOT worker's life after work-zone crash |

VINITA — Five inmates from the Northeast Oklahoma Correctional Center were working with Jarrell Gray, the Oklahoma Department of Transportation’s superintendent in Delaware County, on a brush-removal project along Oklahoma 20 west of Jay on the morning of May 18. Gray became pinned between the car and a wood chipper when a Crown Victoria driven by a Jay resident struck a Department of Corrections van used to transport the inmates around 9 a.m. Inmates Cory McCarroll, Quinton Ross, Jerry Hoehne, Kenneth Coulter and Steve Laver tried to save Gray, but he died at a hospital later that morning. The men, along with DOC Sgt. Jason Lemons, received certificates of commendation for their efforts from the DOC and ODOT during a Board of Corrections meeting Thursday at Northeast Oklahoma Correctional Center in Vinita.
