A Texas county jail inmate was hospitalized on Saturday after a fellow prisoner allegedly poked out his right eye.
According to the Cameron County Sheriff's Department, Federico Fuentes, 22, became involved in a dispute with another inmate at the Carrizalez-Rucker Detention Center in Olmito shortly before 3:45 p.m. Saturday.
During the argument, Chief Deputy Gus Reyna said the prisoner allegedly injured Fuentes in his right eye.
Fuentes was taken to the Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen for treatment.
Reyna could not confirm reports that Fuentes had been taken to a hospital in San Antonio for specialized treatment.
"He might have gone after being released from our custody," he said.
It was not known at press time, if Fuentes' eye had been saved.
According to jail records, Fuentes was arrested on March 10 by a local drug task force and charged with possession of a controlled substance and delivery of controlled substance.
Reyna said Fuentes was released from county custody after he posted $50,000 in bonds some time shortly after the incident on Saturday.
Although the identity of the attacker was not available at press time, Reyna said investigators have started a criminal case against him.
