(KUTV) Amid a shortage in correctional officers and a drop in the number of inmates, the Utah Department of Corrections has announced it plans to close two buildings at the Utah State Prison in Draper. According to a news release, the department plans to move inmates out of the Lone Peak housing facility as well as one building at the Timpanogos Women's Correctional Facility. This will happen during the next few months, the department said. Some inmates will be moved to other parts of the prison while others may be transferred to county jails, officials said. "The Department is taking this action as it continues to manage a shortage of correctional officers that has required mandatory overtime, which can take a toll on staff and contribute to burnout," the news release stated. "Most important, these actions ensure our ability to provide the level of supervision needed for safety and security." According to the department, there are 142 correctional officer vacancies between the Draper prison and the Central Utah Correctional Facility in Gunnison. Read More. |
