| As manhunt continues for loose inmate, lawmakers seek answers from Corrections department |

LINCOLN — State lawmakers are seeking answers as to how two inmates escaped from a medium- to maximum-security prison and whether protocol on response to an escape needs reviewing. Omaha State Sen. Heath Mello said Sunday that he’s concerned whether Friday’s prison break was a result of a procedural failure within the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services, staffing shortages or both. Mello said he appreciated Corrections Director Scott Frakes taking full responsibility for Corrections not keeping Nebraskans safe. “But the concern now is how do we make sure something like this never happens again,” he said.
