| Committee members: Use emergency funds to hire more officers for troubled Corrections Department |

LINCOLN — In the wake of the escape of two dangerous convicts, a panel of state legislators called Thursday for Gov. Pete Ricketts to use emergency funds to immediately hire more corrections officers. A letter, sent by 11 members of a special legislative committee probing the problems at the Department of Correctional Services, said that the “troubling break in security” that allowed the escape at the Lincoln Correctional Center requires urgent steps. “Action needs to be taken immediately to assure Nebraska that these lapses of security are not tolerated — not one more day,” stated the letter, which was sent by State Sen. Colby Coash of Lincoln, whose district includes a handful of state prisons. Read More. |
