ORLANDO — A man who announced his allegiance to the Islamic State while he slaughtered 49 people Sunday morning at an Orlando gay nightclub had a promising but brief career with the Florida Department of Corrections before he was terminated six months later. The 29-year-old Omar Mateen even got Port St. Lucie police school resource officer Steven Brown to vouch for his character in a reference included in his job application, which was released Thursday by the state prisons bureau.
