| Three area communities wait for utility payments from state prisons |

That is the word Mount Sterling Mayor Dane Flesner uses to describe his city's problem with collecting money from the state of Illinois. The state is behind in paying utility bills in many communities across Illinois because it has operated without a budget for more than 11 months. It owes the Brown County community nearly $370,000 in overdue water bills for the Western Illinois Correctional Center, the medium-security prison that houses 1,800 inmates. "I think it's terrible that the state of Illinois is piggybacking off of a community of 1,900 people," Flesner said. Mount Sterling is one of three West-Central Illinois communities with a Department of Corrections facility awaiting late utility payments from the state. Pittsfield is owed $104,000 in gas and water payments, and Clayton is owed about $26,000 for water service. Both are home to DOC work camps. Read More. |
