A Louisiana State Penitentiary inmate who served 24 years was set free last week after DNA evidence recently cleared him of a rape he has long-maintained he did not commit. Michael Williams went to prison on aggravated rape charges when he was 16-years-old. In 1998, Williams contacted the Innocence Project. Attorneys re-examine DNA from old crimes, and the DNA evidence has cleared his name. In the past two years, eight inmates have been freed from Louisiana prisons thanks to DNA. Defense attorney Jim Boren said the eight exonerated inmates are just the tip of the iceberg. |
