Officers injured in scuffle with inmate

A Houghton County (Mich.) Sheriff's deputy and a corrections officer at the Houghton County Jail were injured March 12 when a man they were scheduled to transport to Marquette became violent.
Sheriff Brian McLean said deputies picked up the unidentified man from Portage Health System at 5:45 a.m. to transport to the Marquette General Hospital psychiatric ward on an Involuntary Transport Committment Order, which is a mental health evaluation and not a criminal charge.
Once inside the patrol car, the subject became verbally abusive and while leaving Hancock began to kick at the back door and window, successfully kicking out the window and screen covering the window out at the Bridge/Montezuma Street intersection in Houghton.
The subject was brought to the Houghton County Sheriff's office for restraints and assistance, and during the scuffle to get him out of the car, deputy Scott Leonard injured his right hand as they fell over in the driveway.
Leonard's hand turned out to be broken in two bones behind the main knuckles, McLean said.
After being restrained and placed in another vehicle, the subject was transported to Marquette General Hospital. While entering the elevator, the subject head-butted deputy Bob Laux, a corrections officer, causing minor injury, "even though he was restrained at the hands and feet and while being assisted in moving by Marquette City Police," McLean said.
The subject was then dropped off at the psychiatric ward at the hospital, McLean said.
"Scott Leonard is off now and goes to the doctor (today) to see when he can return to work ... it'll probably be a couple of weeks to possibly a month," McLean said. "Bob Laux suffered a small contusion on his left forehead."
