COLLINS—With a rise in assaults, staffing concerns and increases in contraband found in prisons, corrections officers from Gowanda, Collins and Lake View held an informational picket outside the Collins Correctional Facility June 28. This is the fifth informational picket hosted by the New York State Correctional Officers and Police Benevolent Association to help spread awareness for the safety of corrections officers within prisons and the increased dangers officers face daily. Pickets have also been held in Elmira, Attica, Livingston and Shawangunk. “We just want to inform the public about what is going on inside the correctional facilities … to let them know about the kind of inmate we deal with on a daily basis,” said NYSCOPBA Western Region Vice President Joe Miano. “A lot of the people in the public don’t understand that, unless they have a family member that works in a facility or knows someone personally, they don’t know what goes on and how it’s getting to alarming rates of assaults on staff.” Read More. |
